Yamagen

L'avis de Gault&Millau

Yamagen is a modern Japanese restaurant with funky, colourful decor designed to emulate the hustle and bustle of downtown Tokyo. The menu has been crafted by Executive Chef Adam Lane and his team of experienced chefs, and blends traditional Japanese cuisine with creative twists. There are three dining spaces – bar, table seating and sushi counter – and service is efficient and friendly. Surrounded by Japanese gardens, bold red, black and timber finishes feature throughout, with the well-stocked bar faced with a gold finish. This is creative, innovative Japanese fare. Start with sashimi tacos: diced salmon with wasabi salsa and diced tuna with mustard soy, served in a crisp taco with avocado, nori, sushi rice and watermelon radish. Wagyu beef gyoza are hot and crisp with a white soy mustard. For mains, there is a choice of robata skewers and a selection of ‘hots’, including a spectacular miso black cod: juicy cod cooked in a caramelised miso coating, delivering great umami flavours. PSST! Sit up at the sushi bar and watch the chefs prepare the intricate dishes. Reviewed for the 2019 Guide
