Slick, smart and sophisticated, this well-known Sydney restaurant is now serving excellent Japanese food in Melbourne. Toko has taken over the former site of FOG on Greville Street in Prahran. The contemporary interior is classy and refined. A barperson shakes out the hippest cocktails, and there is a sushi bar where you can sit and watch the culinary masters in action.
In typical izakaya style, the outstanding Japanese food at Toko is designed to share. Hiramasa kingfish comprises six delicate slices of fish that have been marinated in a dressing of yuzu and chives. Lovely and fresh, the flavours within this dish are completely more-ish. Canadian scallops are a real highlight of the menu. Three plump and juicy scallops are lightly chargrilled and then topped with sweet pickled apple and a dollop of garlicky jalapeño – absolutely divine!
