The Black Toro

L'avis de Gault&Millau

Using fresh local ingredients, Chef Garen Maskal gives a modern spin to dishes from Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. The restaurant in busy Kingsway, Glen Waverley, has a fresh, vibrant feel. Dark wooden chairs contrast with predominately white walls, while a striking mural of a black bull leaves you in no doubt as to the theme here. With a range of snacks, medium plates and large plates, there is something for everyone on The Black Toro menu. Start with salmon and kimchi tartare – coarsely chopped salmon, dressed with avocado and sesame, and served with an interesting nori tostada. Aji panca – the colourful, mild Peruvian red pepper – lends a distinctive flavour to the tender beef cheek, which is served on a salsa of bright yellow corn, and garnished with charred spring onions for a vibrant colour contrast, all ready to be wrapped up in the accompany tortillas. This dish, from the large plate selection, is perfect for sharing. PSST! Sundays are Boozy Sunday Fiesta at The Black Toro – six dishes and 90 minutes of bottomless frozen margaritas, Hispanic spritz and Tecate lager, all for just $65pp! Reviewed for the 2019 Guide
