Acclaimed Executive Chef Andrew McConnell has a number of funky Melbourne restaurants. Supernormal – a kitsch and super-cool modern Asian eatery – is one of them.
The place has an incessant buzz with an open kitchen, vibrant tables full of Japanese condiments and, for those daring enough, a karaoke bar downstairs. Make sure you arrive early as the no-bookings policy makes it difficult to get a table, but once you do you’ll see why it’s so popular.
Start off with some Japanese-inspired snacks like kimchi cabbage, daikon and cucumber. Choose something from their raw bar, such as fresh kingfish with thinly cut kohlrabi and citrus dashi. Their New England lobster roll is a signature dish – a soft brioche bread with oozy mayo and juicy crustacean. Prawn and chicken dumplings come soaking in a fiery chilli vinegar sauce with thinly spiced scallions. Slow-cooked lamb is tender, soft and sticky, marinating in Xinjiang (a spicy red sauce), and served in a pot with a sesame flatbread on the side.
PSST! With salted caramel and soft chocolate, their delectable peanut butter parfait is so worth the calories.
