Silks

L'avis de Gault&Millau

Silks is out to impress. Hidden away in a corner of Crown Melbourne, behind two unassuming doors, is one of the city’s more striking venues, with an impressive collection of valuable Chinese artworks. The main dining room is a sight to behold, with floor-to-ceiling windows providing a spectacular view over the bursting flames that line the Yarra River. There are five private dining rooms, but the most impressive is the Mongolian tent, where diners are surrounded by tapestries and wood carvings. The food is Chinese influenced, and diners can choose from the à la carte menu or a number of tasting selections. Popular starters include a lobster san choi bao, which is a crispy and crunchy take on the much-loved classic. The menu is a blend of traditional and cutting edge, with the Peking duck prepared traditionally, for example, while a Portuguese baked scallop shell with seafood and crab claw comes served with a complex truffle mayonnaise. PSST! On weekdays, Silks serves up a $50 yum cha menu that is great for diners eager to enjoy some special creations with an iconic Melbourne view. Reviewed for the 2019 Guide
