Shoya

L'avis de Gault&Millau

Tucked down a little alleyway in the heart of Chinatown in the CBD is Shoya, a traditional Japanese haunt with the most divine classic cuisine from Chef Shigeo Nonaka. The inside is multi-level, with a number of dining areas. It’s a traditional setting so shoes come off no matter where you’re seated and ultra-polite Japanese staff take your order. At lunch, choose from an array of set menus. Start with a small bowl of pickled appetiser then a warm bowl of steamed savoury egg custard that’s soft and melting. The tail of grilled eel is delicately placed on a plate with a slightly sticky caramel-style sauce. Perfectly fried tempura vegetables and prawns come on a white plate with a mild soy-based dipping sauce. Premium sashimi – including a Hervey Bay scallop, swimmingly fresh tuna and salmon cut in cubes to perfection – is wonderfully satisfying. A small grilled fillet of fish, such as kingfish, is served with edamame and a lemon wedge. PSST! During the winter months, Shoya are proud to bring in rare sea urchin – a very special addition to the menu. Reviewed for the 2019 Guide
