Joe Grbac (ex-The Press Club) is one of Melbourne’s finest chefs. Saxe is his first solo venture, opening its doors in 2017, and providing the inner city with an outstanding new venue. An intimate space downstairs allows diners to see the skilled kitchen and bar team at work, while the elegant dining room on the first floor, with dark furniture, whitewashed brick and wainscoted walls, is perfect for a romantic evening or a business lunch. There is an à la carte menu available, but it is well worth opting for their very affordable set menus. The starters open the meal with a fun air, and include a cauliflower and macaroni cheese arancini with truffle mayonnaise, and a has-to-be-tried snap, crackle and pop with sesame dust. Yarra Valley artichokes, Buxton River trout, Koo Wee Rup asparagus and Lakes Entrance dory are all excellent options on the entree and main sections, look fabulous on the plate, and burst with flavour.
