Loud and gregarious restaurant Rock Sugar serves Thai food and, undoubtedly, the most outrageously fabulous cocktails in the city.
Attracting a Gen-Y crowd, this brightly coloured restaurant buzzes with loud music and the loud shake of cocktails being mixed. Don’t expect too much quiet conversation, but be prepared join in the fun atmosphere. Cocktails are a must, such as the signature fairy floss martini – the most Instagrammable drink, as you watch the confection dissolve in the glass.
Food-wise, start with a soft steamed bun filled with soft-shell crab, teamed with the sweetness of pineapple and spicy chilli jam. Hiramasa kingfish is light and dainty, and served with cucumber, chilli and salmon roe. Larger dishes include their selection of curries, such as a rich red curry with a giant duck leg, pineapple and authentic young bamboo, or a beef massaman with peanuts and coriander. A beef cheek comes with a refreshing salad of shaved kohlrabi and cleansing pomelo. For a light dish, there’s a silken tofu salad, custardy and creamy in its Asian marinade.
