It has been over five years since Luke Nguyen and Mark Jensen opened the Riley Street incarnation of Red Lantern, showcasing regional Vietnamese cuisine for a loyal following, with an increasing emphasis on sustainable food sources. The Indochinese decor works well to create a series of homey spaces within spaces, serviced by an energetic wait staff and underscored by the buzz of a Darlinghurst location. Variety and vibrancy shine through the well-crafted menu. Deeply flavoured dishes balanced with fragrant herbs and fresh textures range from Vietnamese signatures to Lap Nguyen’s secret family goat curry. Look out for the lightly battered pieces of chilli-salted squid cut with a zingy citrus dipping sauce, while tender chargrilled chicken comes with a hint of smoke and a peanut sauce that delivers a lingering chilli warmth. The pan-fried fish is served with a complex coconut broth flavoured with lemongrass and coriander, while succulently pink and caramelised cubes of beef are wok tossed with garlic, sweet onions and black pepper.
