New Nordic

L'avis de Gault&Millau

While Scandinavian furniture has been influencing Australian homes and restaurants for many years now, we have been slower to adopt their cuisine into our multicultural dining scene. New Nordic creates a slice of the region for curious diners, and Chef Hien Nguyen’s culinary treats will reward those willing to try something new. Next door to an art-house cinema, the space is a cosy mix of tan tables, hanging plants, low lighting and furs on the back of chairs. The menu offers smaller plates, including bread with brown butter, house-smoked venison, or baked Swedish gnocchi with mushrooms. The standout here is the torched gravlax, which is something very special and sees three-day-cured salmon served with fennel, celery and lime caviar. Torched Hervey Bay scallops come with native finger lime that brings a zingy pop to the dish. On colder nights, more-ish options like Mamma’s meatballs or baked veal and prosciutto loaf are hard to resist. PSST! New Nordic is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner so you have plenty of chances to bring some Scandinavian cuisine into your life! Reviewed for the 2019 Guide
