L'avis de Gault&Millau

First-time restaurateurs, brothers Aditya and Prateek Dhawan are breathing new life into the Indian restaurant scene in Fitzroy. Cheerfully decorated with festive orange decorations, the venue features a colourful mural across the white brick walls. Seating is an eclectic mish-mash of wooden tables and chairs. The menu features a variety of Indian specialities with some familiar favourites. Curry pots range from the popular butter chicken, through to the Punjabi favourite, bharta: eggplant skewered, roasted, and then mashed with peas, onions and tomatoes. The lamb saag is a rich and intense dish featuring cubed lamb that has been cooked slowly until tender and the sauce is well spiced. Mop it up with generous servings of garlic or plain naan. For something lighter, go for the tandoori street grills; the paneer tikka stands out with tandoor-roasted paneer cheese, onions and peppers, served with a light mint dressing. Alternatively, the dosai, a south Indian speciality, is worth seeking out. PSST! If you are a fan of sweet desserts, try the gulab jamun: house-made Indian donuts with a hint of cardamom and rosewater. Reviewed for the 2019 Guide
