Chef and owner Richard Maisano grew up in Italy and moved to Australia age 13. He went on study hospitality in Switzerland and work in Italy. He brought the knowledge and skill he learnt back to Australia and channelled it in to Masani which he opened in 1983.
Masani is located in the heart of Carlton in a beautiful neo-gothic building. The dining rooms are grand and beautifully presented. A large open fire a warm welcome will keep you feeling cosy despite the soaring ceilings.
The seasonal menu includes game, meats, seafood and hand made pasta. The food is traditional Italian with a few Australian influences. For example the pretty gamberi con agrumi (prawns with citrus) are served on a bed of avocado and coriander, the plate studded with jewel-like citrus segments and pomegranate. The rich cacciucco can be thought of as an Italian style Bouillabaisse, the rich fish stock base is flavoured with pinot grigio and aromatic basil and bathes a generous selection of fish and shellfish. Richard's Swiss training is revealed by his traditional Swiss style souffle with all the trappings.
