L'avis de Gault&Millau

Owner Flavio Carnevale successfully transitioned Popolo to Marta, introducing a predominantely Roman-style menu, at the same well-positioned site in Rushcutters Bay, with Chef Claudio Barzano now at the helm. The well-stocked bar forms the centrepiece of the open-plan restaurant, with the indoor seating also extending into a large courtyard space outside. The service is incredibly attentive, impressively so, even when the restaurant is near capacity. Simplicity is the key to Roman cuisine, and Marta’s interpretation does not deviate from that premise. The antipasti selection includes simple favourites such as anchovies and butter bruschetta, and house-made ricotta with tomatoes, capers, olives and anchovy dressing. Larger plates feature generous portions of free-range chicken or bisteccas. The pasta section of the menu includes the popular cacio e pepe, along with rigatoni, fettuccine and bombolotti. And then there’s the Roman version of pizza – choose from 11 options, ranging from a simple margherita to the spicy norcina. PSST!
