Malabar Darlinghurst

L'avis de Gault&Millau

Chef Mohammed Sali has been rattling the pans at this local institution for many years now, his perspective on southern Indian food constantly evolving, and delighting diners at the same time. This history is shown on the elegant walls of this dining room, with a wide window overlooking the city and Kings Cross. It’s a seductive view for the equally exotic fare, with cosy nooks for couples and room for groups. Start with a crisp bonda: spiced potato and cauliflower bright with green chilli, then sample their signature Bangalore dosai, a crisp lentil crepe filled with potato, onion, spice and freshly grated coconut. Curries of beef vindaloo and chicken makhani show classic flair, but a highlight has to be the naan, pillow soft and with plenty of garlic or cheese. Another is the well-priced and accessible wine list. As times change, it’s great to see a place like this hardly does – and please, don’t ever. PSST! If you’d like a little extra heat be sure to let them know – they love showing off their expertise at adapting meals to customer preferences. Reviewed for the 2019 Guide
