Chef Chung Jae Lee grew up in Seoul’s Mapo District, where Korean barbecue originated. So it’s no surprise that in addition to a menu of Korean delights there’s a barbecue menu for the on-table braziers. You might think you’ve stumbled into inner-city Melbourne as you walk down the popping graffiti alleyway towards Little Miss Korea. The lane opens into a cavernous warehouse space with polished concrete floors, a graffiti wall and Korean grills sunk into each table, with pull-down exhaust fans to catch the smoke. Start off with a bowl of addictive and crunchy lotus root chips. Then try the steamed vegetarian or pork dumplings glistening with sesame–soy dipping sauce, or luscious tempura eggplant in a crisp lacy batter, dramatically balanced on thin shards of tempura-fried egg noodle. Looking for something with a heat note? Try the torched pork belly, spicy with chilli paste and softened with coconut milk and ginger. PSST!
