Il Solito Posto
L'avis de Gault&Millau
Chef Nathan Morfett brings years of experience in fine dining restaurants to his traditional Italian dishes.
Located just off Flinders Lane, this basement space is a favourite venue with the business crowd who pour in from the many skyscrapers in the area. The decor is rustic and homey, with low ceilings, dim lighting and soft music playing.
Specials are written up on the blackboard and a small list of favourites are firmly ensconced on the regular menu. The antipasto board is a great place to start, with spicy salami, creamy ricotta, lemon-soaked anchovies and pickled vegetables served with crispy bread. A pork and veal rigatoni special is delicate and hearty, with the hand-made potato gnocchi with wild boar, red wine and prunes another standout. Sides of rocket and parmesan or Italian potatoes with garlic and rosemary are also great to share. For those with room, secondi plates – such as the slow-braised lamb in white wine – are generous and well worth a look.
PSST! There’s a great takeaway menu if you want to pick something up on your way home from work in the city.
