L'avis de Gault&Millau
Chef Yasuhiro Fukuhara, who oversees the Ichi Ni kitchen, ensures your traditional Japanese food is as wonderful as the St Kilda view.
Located in one of the most iconic spots Melbourne has to offer, this Japanese izakaya has been a popular haunt for years. At the indoor tables you can overlook skilled chefs in action, or sit in the outdoor area and watch stunning sunsets.
Boasting an extensive menu in a tapas style, nibble on edamame and agadashi tofu. Then head to the sake carpaccio: flame-grilled salmon with wakame, sesame seeds and soy ponzu. Swimmingly fresh tuna tataki has a light yuzu and shallot dressing on shredded daikon, while ebi mayo prawns have a crispy outer shell, smeared in mayonnaise and a subtle hint of wasabi. A wagyu steak with a marble score of 9+ is served with Ichi Ni original yakitori sauce. There’s a huge selection of sushi and sashimi and the inside-out rainbow roll with salmon and avocado has a different seafood topping to each bite.
PSST! Bring in the young ones for Ichi Ni’s special kids’ poke bowl with cooked tuna.
