L'avis de Gault&Millau
Owner Simon Gloftis has brought his Greek eatery to Brisbane and has appointed Bryan Kelly as Head Chef. Bryan, who has spent many years in the Mediterranean, set up the original Hellenika on the Gold Coast.
Located by the pool at The Calile Hotel, the restaurant has a very Greek atmosphere, with olive trees around the alfresco terrace, travertine marble and lots of timber. Adding to the Greek vibe, pink-coated wait staff provide efficient and friendly service. The comprehensive wine list features local, Greek and other European wines.
The menu is similar to Hellenika on the Gold Coast – traditional, well-crafted Greek food. Start with house-made taramasalata dip served with excellent house-baked bread. Then, try the gavros – soft, delicate, cured white anchovies served in oil with lemon. Lightly grilled octopus (htapodi) is cut into bite-size pieces, charred and crisp on the outside and tender within. Superbly tender pork belly (hirino) comes with a crisp crack-ling, and is served on a bed of soft braised leeks.
PSST! For that truly Greek island experience, enjoy your meal while lying in a cabana beside the pool.
