Hanabishi Japanese Restaurant

L'avis de Gault&Millau

In a city with a wealth of new Japanese restaurants with cutting-edge interior design, Hanabishi remains a popular and unpretentious stalwart, serving up affordable lunch staples to more serious cuisine on the à la carte menu. In a non-descript location, just off one of Melbourne’s busiest streets, Hanabishi leans away flashiness and instead is comfortable in its skin as a neighbourhood favourite. A charming selection of foreign and domestic wines sits alongside an excellent sake list. The extensive sushi and sashimi menu is a great place to start, with choice selections of both much-loved favourites and some more creative additions. The duck kuwayaki is a delight, with sweet soy-based duck meat offset delicately with a citrus powered salad. For those looking for something special, a selection of prized wagyu is available, and a whole barramundi is prepared in a salt kiln, which is broken with a degree of drama at the table. An udon and soba noodle section rounds out the menu nicely. PSST! Why not book in for one of their banquet menus, and let the chefs choose the dishes for you. Reviewed for the 2019 guide
