Gowings Bar & Grill

L'avis de Gault&Millau

UPDATE: In February 2019, Michael Box, who has worked at a number of QT venues, returned to QT Sydney to take on the role of Executive Chef at Gowings Bar & Grill. Unlike New York or London, hotel restaurants are rarely dining drawcards in Sydney, with most guests leaving their lodgings to eat elsewhere. Gowings Bar & Grill is bucking that trend, however, drawing both guests and the public to their bistro on the second floor of the QT hotel. The hotel is easy to spot, with the famous door-girls dressed in black tights, berets and bright pink wigs. A short journey in the psychedelic lifts brings diners to the lobby, which is wall-to-wall suitcases, with the restaurant just beyond. The busy kitchen serves up European brasserie fare, and dishes making full use of their wood-fired rotisseries and ovens. The spanner crab cake is light and fluffy with a delicate taste that is given some power by old-fashioned mustard. Of the larger dishes, it is tough pick between the lamb shoulder with eggplant barabacoa and the poached chicken with crispy skin and barbecued leeks. There are some statement dishes available too, such as the fresh lobster or the Black Onyx scotch fillet. PSST! Gowings Bar & Grill puts on a great breakfast menu, perfect for an early business meeting. Reviewed for the 2019 Guide
