Residents of Rathdowne Village in Carlton North have struck gold with this welcoming European bistro headed by Head Chef Peter Savage. With its cosy nooks and soft lighting, Gerald’s Bar offers an intimate environment, perfect for date night. Grab a window seat to people watch or perch on a stool up at the bar. The rear of the venue has a separate quieter dining area. The menu is driven by the availability of seasonal ingredients and the menu – listed on a chalkboard above the bar – changes daily. To complement the extensive wine list, choose some small plates to accompany your drinks, such as Victorian yabbies dressed with a saffron butter, or try the lamb cutlets served on a bed of smooth pea puree. A standout dish is the rock flathead; the satisfyingly crispy skin and addictive creamed leeks are infused with a herb oil – fantastic! Don’t forget to try the famous chocolate pudding. It takes 20 minutes to cook and will reward you with a gooey chocolate fondant centre. PSST! Wine by the glass changes daily, so ask the staff for a recommendation. Reviewed for the 2019 Guide
