Georges on Waymouth
L'avis de Gault&Millau
Every town has them: restaurants that stand the test of time, with a menu that offers popular favourites rather than following the latest fads and trends. Such restaurants become much-loved stalwarts for locals, and Georges on Waymouth is such a place.
In a two-storey space, waistcoated and utterly charming waiters open doors, pull out chairs and lay linen napkins for diners before proudly talking through the menu.
The veal carpaccio is a popular starter, served with fresh rocket and parmesan and finished with truffle oil. There are some tempting pasta options, such as the pork, mushroom and fennel pappardelle, a dish that is great to soak up with the complimentary bread on offer. However, the lamb press is the dish that the team are most proud of, with new lamb marinated, slow-cooked and then wrapped in pancetta, roasted once more and served with cumin yoghurt and pepita seeds – just perfect with a Barossa shiraz.
PSST! Keep an eye out for their themed dinners, such as the Wines of Greece event, with five dishes matched with a selection of imported wines.
