L'avis de Gault&Millau
French-born Géraud Fabre has been leading the kitchen at France-Soir since 2000. He has always executed the epitome of French cuisine, with techniques and dishes that you would find in the finest bistros of Paris.
Since opening in 1986, the dining hall of this Toorak Road institution has remained the same – classic white tablecloths, wooden chairs and service so outstanding that you always feel welcomed. Their outstanding wine list is an encyclopaedia with varieties that are rare treasures.
The menu is classic. What could be more French than escargots de Bourgogne – snails in garlic butter with a mesmerising smell and lovely taste? Or try the gambas au Pernod® – gorgeously fresh king prawns in a velvety sauce with just the right amount of tang, and the light cream can be soaked up with the delectable French baguette. Their O’Connor steaks have been pleasing crowds for years, including the 280gm filet de boeuf (thick eye fillet) cooked to perfection.
PSST! If you have a very special bottle you’d like to have with some fabulous fare, France-Soir is BYO every night except Saturday.
