L'avis de Gault&Millau
With plenty of restaurants aiming for the feeling of an authentic family meal, few in Sydney are as genuine as Cipri Italian. Diners are welcomed inside by siblings Joe and Anthony Cipri, who manage the front of house, with middle brother Carmelo leading things in the kitchen.
In a romantic and welcoming dining room just off famous Oxford Street, an older Paddington crowd enjoy the Cipri family’s traditional Italian flavours, with some modern creativity thrown in.
Classic appetisers like carpaccio, bruschetta and crumbed eggplant are a great way to start. The mezzelune alle castagne e porcini – a pasta dish comprising chestnut and porcini encased in a cocoa pasta, with truffled pecorini cheese – is difficult to pass on, while the hearty slow-braised duck and Swiss brown mushroom ragu is a warming and traditional dish. The sides work well to share, with hand-cut potato chips coming loaded with dried olives and spices.
PSST! If you want to stock up your home pantry with the flavours of Cipri, be sure to purchase some of their oils, spices and pickles on the way out.
