L'avis de Gault&Millau
Prolific Sydney restaurateur Kingsley Smith has opened numerous venues across Sydney, and China Diner, just up the hill from Bondi Beach, is one of his more recent offerings. The busy kitchen team serve up dishes from across China and South-East Asia.
China Diner is modelled after a 1930s Shanghai dining room with eclectic artwork (like three huge Warhol prints of Mao), retro funk and soul music playing, and a long bar where creative cocktails are whipped up.
The pork san choi bao is fun, crunchy and a great way to start. Steaming bowls of dumplings are quick to pile up on tables, with the crispy lamb with cumin and the prawn and water chestnut options both popular. Duck pancakes are another standout, with crisp spring onion, wafer-thin pancakes and slices of roast duck smothered under a delicate hoisin sauce. Larger dishes like the massaman beef or the master stock pork belly with chilli, caramel and lime are great for sharing.
PSST! China Diner caters for group events, with banquets starting at only $50 per person.
