L'avis de Gault&Millau

A St Kilda institution on Fitzroy Street, Café Di Stasio has been serving diners for decades. Italian waitstaff attired in formal suits greet you as you enter. Inside, you’ll find stunning Italian murals, white tablecloths and elegant decor. On a sunny day, nab a table outside and watch the passers-by on the eclectic street. Start with fritto misto – a delightful selection of seafood fried in a light tempura batter, and finished with a simple squeeze of lemon. A crayfish omelette (omelette D’Aragosta) is pan fried with a rich, dark bisque sauce. Vegetarians will love the spinaci saltati – pan-fried spinach with lemon juice and scattered with parmesan slivers. House-made pasta is as great as you can get. Try the linguine con gamberi – a mountain of linguine with crunchy pieces of fresh prawns. Il secondo may include traditional saltimbocca or perhaps try the Tuscan-style chickpeas (casseula di ceci) served with black cabbage, tomato and garlic bruschetta. PSST! Match your meal with a Di Stasio house wine from their own Yarra Valley winery or with a bottle from the extensive list. Reviewed for the 2019 Guide
