Café del Mar

L'avis de Gault&Millau

This self-proclaimed Mediterranean restaurant certainly incorporates many cuisines from the region, including Spanish, Italian, Greek, Turkish and Moroccan. Café del Mar has elegant, moody decor with dark grey carpet, black marble tables and dark padded banquettes and upholstered chairs. Being on a rooftop terrace, there is a great view across the water to Darling Harbour, and in warmer months there is seating outside on the balcony. The menu offers a selection of tapas, sharing platters, small plates and large plates. From the selection of small plates, the seared scallops are beautifully tender with a just-golden blush from the flash cooking. Served with spinach, eggplant and a bacon and spice reduction, this is a very tasty dish. Moving on to large plates, the pomegranate-glazed duck breast is moist and pink and deliciously dressed with a fensenjun reduction – a combination of pomegranate molasses and walnuts. Salt-roasted broccolini and roasted walnuts add a lovely crunch and make this a standout dish. PSST! Weekday lunch specials include a main course and a glass of bubbles or a beer for $25.
