Bondi Trattoria

L'avis de Gault&Millau

In a part of Sydney that sees restaurants come and go as fast as the tides, Bondi Trattoria has been here since 1987 and is a local stalwart. Chef Joe Pavlovich and Alasdair France are in charge now, after spending more than a decade opening venues for Luke Mangan. The food is as fresh as the sea breeze that whips up each evening, and has a distinctly Mediterranean feel. Appetisers blend classic dips and bruschettas with more indulgent offerings, like the roasted Moreton Bay bugs, which come drenched in a rich butter and chilli sauce, with swirls of buffalo mozzarella. Most dishes are for sharing, and come as generous serves, with the haloumi salad delivering a deep bowl of fried cheese rectangles, salt-baked beets and beetroot hummus with a sweet honey and thyme dressing. Creative pizzas feature, such as lamb sausage and harissa yoghurt, and prawns with cavolo nero pesto, while the pasta dishes are also popular. For mains, the polenta-crusted whiting fillets with tomato–chilli jam and prawns is a fresh, seasonal dish. PSST! There’s a different special every night of the week – well worth a look.
