Becco co-owner Simon Harley oversees the general operations and sources the ingredients from Queen Victoria Market and Victorian farms. In 2015, Italian-born Carmine Mari stepped into the Head Chef position, bringing a wealth of experience from his time in Italy. Expansive windows offer a full view of this long-standing Italian restaurant. A popular spot with the pre-theatre crowd, expect white-linen-dressed tables and mixed seating in a roomy space with a warm ambience. Peruse the menu and you’ll spot Italian classics such as veal saltimbocca and spaghetti vongole. Those wanting to graze will find a great selection of smaller dishes, such as battered oysters with a chilli aioli or the chilli flour-dusted calamari with a spicy jalapeño aioli. Pasta dishes are well seasoned and generously portioned. The risotto is flavoured with a garlic and chive puree and topped with a smoky fresh ricotta. Seafood specials are well executed, with a delicate whiting fillet served on a bed of fregola, accompanied by mussels and pipis in a white wine jus. PSST!
