Bar Lourinhã

L'avis de Gault&Millau

With the focus firmly on outstanding Spanish food and wine, this favourite little haunt has been headed up by Chef Matt McConnell for over a decade. This gorgeous eatery, tucked down a Melbourne CBD alleyway, pleases customers with its eclectic interior full of ornaments, pictures and random mismatched items that give a fun vibe. Wine is a standout, with the dedicated sommeliers well in tune with the latest European varieties available both by bottle and glass. Start with their classic kingfish pancetta and lemon oil. This dainty dish is of exceptional quality, and each mouthful is delicate and delightful. Served as a traditional racione, garlic-cream mushrooms have always been a highlight, with simple bread to soak up the delectable sauce. Meltingly moist slow-cooked lamb has an interesting black lentil accompaniment and an almond-cream emulsion. Pair this dish with a Spanish grenache, which, like many of the wines on offer, is available by the half bottle. PSST! Bar Lourinhã offers many of the dishes as half serves, which means you get to try double the amount of deliciousness. Reviewed for the 2019 Guide
