L'avis de Gault&Millau
Owner/Head Chef Jessi Singh has been cooking up an Indian storm for over five years at Babu Ji, his modern Indian restaurant in St Kilda.
Chef Singh’s intention is to create simple yet sophisticated food in a humble and inviting setting, and Babu Ji is perfect for a family outing or for groups eager to try the unique and exciting Indian spices.
To start, the paper-thin pappadums are served with three house-made condiments. In street-food style, bite-sized Bengali salmon has been marinated in mustard and fennel seeds and is served with a sticky lime and spicy mayo. From the tandoor is their speciality tandoori chicken. It’s oozing with flavour and has a perfect charring. Their curries are outstanding! Butter chicken is creamy and more-ish, cooked with tomato, fenugreek and cardamom, while lamb lucknowi is a royal-style curry with a sauce made from nutmeg and mace. House-made raita and garlic naan are the perfect accompaniments.
PSST! Enjoy their tasting menu of any two choices ‘from the street’ and any two curries for $49 and you can BYO for only $10 corkage.
