Almond Bar reflects Head Chef Sharon Salloum’s vision of capturing her Syrian heritage and bringing the food and hospitality to Australia.
On the quiet corner in Darlinghurst, this small, intimate and unassuming restaurant is immediately welcoming. Decked out with Middle Eastern artefacts and wood carvings, the decor is a great match to the cuisine on offer.
With a menu as diverse as the culture, in true Middle Eastern fashion, Almond Bar’s dishes are designed to be shared. Start with a few dips like traditional or chilli hummus or a za’atar labna for the more adventurous. Then move onto some small dishes, like sambusek with its light, crispy, fried pastry and meaty filling, or pumpkin kibbeh for the vegetarians! The large dishes follow – lamb or chicken skewers are a real staple in a Middle Eastern dining experience, but for those looking for something really traditional, try the shish barak (cauliflower and olive dumplings) or Syrian duck served with pearl couscous, cabbage and fig jam.
