Alegrias Spanish Tapas
L'avis de Gault&Millau
Chef Victor Elcano from Spain’s Basque region creates dishes that the area is famous for – from tapas to share and hearty mains to flavour-packed paellas.
The restaurant has a nice, comfortable ambience reflecting Spanish style. Saturday diners can enjoy watching the flamenco dancers – it’s dinner and a show in one. The friendly staff know the menu well, and are happy to assist diners with selection.
You have to try the gambas al ajillo (garlic prawns), a very traditional Spanish dish. Juicy prawns are sautéed in garlic, olive oil and chilli and served with rustic bread for dipping – delicioso! The slow-braised beef cheeks (carillada a la riojana) with truffled mashed potato is an amazing dish, with meat so tender that you’ll want more. The colour of the black squid ink seafood paella (paella arroz negro) may not be conventional, but the flavour is on point, while the paella mixta, with seafood, chicken and pork, is another very tasty option.
PSST! Try to leave room for the hand-made churros. Served in paper bag and accompanied by a thick chocolate dipping sauce, these sweet treats are to die for!
