1889 Enoteca

L'avis de Gault&Millau

Head Chef Matthew Stubbing’s menu is based on Roman-inspired food with a modern contemporary finish. Located in the classic Moreton Rubber Works building – renovated in 2008 – 1889 Enoteca has an old-world charm. High ceilings, red banquettes, timber, mirrors and a marble-topped bar – surrounded by bottles of wine – provide a sophisticated venue for this classic Italian emporium. The service is classic Italian – professional and knowledgeable. A classic vitello tonnato is thinly sliced rare veal, rolled up and served in a tuna mayonnaise with olives, capers and grilled zucchini. You can choose a steak or fresh market fish, but it is the hand-made pasta that 1889 Enoteca is best known for. Pasta carbonara is perfectly cooked soft ribbon pasta with eggs, Italian guanciale ham and parmigiano reggiano – an authentic Roman carbonara. Pappardelle al ragu features an earthy pork and beef ragu with tomato sugo, while the soft and tender hand-made gnocchi is served with pork and fennel sausage in a creamy parmesan and truffle sauce. Simple, classic and timeless. PSST! From 4.30pm to 6pm on Fridays enjoy a sophisticated Aperol or Campari with complimentary antipasto. Reviewed for the 2019 Guide
