XOPP, the youngest sibling in the Golden Century family, is settling into its home in Sydney’s new Darling Square on the mezzanine of the eye-catching Exchange building. As head chef, the restaurant has snared Zachary Ng, who spent nine years in the kitchen at Sepia.
The interior combines exposed industrial ducting and concrete columns with slick mirror finished black ceilings incorporating colourful fabric inserts above neutral woven flooring, chunky plastic chairs and tan leather banquettes. It has a casual, contemporary feel.
Start with hot or cold entrees or bar snacks, like the slightly sweet mantou rolls filled with prawns and delicately dressed in XO mayonnaise and XO sauce, or crispy pork rib with red bean curd. For the main course, it’s hard to ignore the signature dish of both the Golden Century and XOPP, and the dish after which this restaurant is named, XO pipis. Big, plump pipis rest on a bed of vermicelli and are dressed with the famous house-made XO sauce. Even a small serving satisfies two diners.
