Chef Ben Sitton came to Merivale’s flagship Italian restaurant in 2016, bringing with him more than 20 years of experience, including time at luminary establishments such as the Savoy Grill and Rockpool Bar & Grill.
Tucked away on a CBD rooftop, Uccello gives diners an overseas-holiday-feel, al fresco dining experience. The large, lightly decorated space opening out to the Pool Club brings music, the sound of water and fresh breezes to the restaurant.
Uccello’s wood-fire oven plays a major role, adding an enticing extra dimension to the menu. So, after finishing the well-chosen complimentary olives and focaccia, try the just-charred baby octopus paired with sweet tomatoes and balanced with capers, al dente kipflers and an earthy bagna cauda. For lovers of seafood, the tagliolini comes with impressively sized pieces of buttery rich spanner crab undercut by lemon and a lingering chilli heat. From the tempting range of wood-fire mains, the John Dory – flavoured with oregano and served with smoke-sweetened tomatoes and crisp pickled zucchini – is a standout.
