British-born Chef Matt Wilkinson is no stranger to the industry, with over 20 years of experience. Formerly in Brunswick East and now relaunched in a permanent CBD location, Wilkinson's new Pope Joan – open for breakfast, lunch and dinner – is as thriving as ever.
With a somewhat European-style interior – with wooden tables, crisp white linen and comfy booths – diners may feel that they’re not just in the Paris end of town, but in Paris itself! Charming and warm service ensure the experience is delightful. Wine options are brief but on point, and boast the region’s finest, such as a Yarra Valley chardy and Gippsland pinot.
For dinner, enjoy a hearty bowl of mussels with a red romesco sauce that goes sublimely with thick chunky chips and a dollop of aioli. Pretty and petite is the local rainbow trout. A fillet, with tail intact, is topped with escabesche vegetables and an orange saffron emulsion. An interesting miso pumpkin dish has wakame and golden sesame seeds.
PSST! Every day, Happy Hour includes ½ doz. oysters for $21 and a bottle of Perrier-Jouët for $100.
