Since opening in 2008, owners Susie and John Rerakis have offered provincial Greek food, applying traditional methods handed down through the generations.
This is a popular family-friendly venue with rustic brick walls and warm wooden panelling throughout.
Come hungry, as portions are generous and there is a lot to enjoy on the menu at Philhellene. To start, go with Greek classics, such as saganaki or freshly made dips with charred pita breads – the melitzanosalata dip is a standout, with char-smoked eggplant, seasoned with mixed herbs and garlic, and finished with a drizzle of olive oil. From the entrees line-up, try the pickled octopus with blush pink tentacles. Small cuts of octopus are served with a smooth fava bean puree and topped with capers, the sharpness of the pickled octopus nicely balanced by the earthy bean puree. From the mains, the go-to dish is the baked lemon lamb – incredibly juicy shredded meat, infused with fresh lemon juice. The mixed grill offers a great selection of meats, accompanied by a fresh, light and colourful Greek salad.
PSST! If it’s too hard to decide, choose one of the banquets.
