For more than 140 years, O’Connell’s has been serving up food of the highest quality. Following in the footsteps of some of Melbourne’s well-known chefs, Chef Tom Brockbank from Kent, England creates gastropub classics with a creative and modern flair.
Hidden away on a quiet corner in South Melbourne, and surrounded by trees and terrace homes, this is a place for locals to indulge in, and for those from further afield to venture to. There is a warm balance of casual and formal, with a relaxed bar in front of a more formal dining room.
The carpaccio starter is an impressive way to begin, with wafer-thin slices of native pepper-spiced beef, balanced superbly with roast beetroot, smoked salt and pecorino. A serious selection of steaks is on offer, as is a rather impressive wine list. However, dishes like the smoked duck are where Chef Brockbank is able to truly show his skills, with delicate slices of meat matched with cherry sorbet, aged honey and pickled daikon.
