In a part of town that sees plenty of restaurants come and go, Mon Ami is a rarity: a French brasserie still run by its original owners and proudly celebrating its 15th year. While it is clear that Ulla Hiltula and Jon Langevad have a love affair with France, their travels have brought in several other fantastic European influences.
The space is rustic and cosy, with an outlook over Carlton Gardens and a Gallic soundtrack rounding out the authentic experience.
The creative specials are written on a small blackboard, but there a several favourites on the menu that keep bringing locals back. An outstanding foie gras with orange glaze is an indulgent way to start, before moving on to the main event – the duck. Since opening, they have served close to 30,000 ducks in a range of styles, with the cracked pepper and brandy cream a much-loved favourite for many.
PSST! The wine is presented in a creative way, with diners able to stroll over to a shelf to select their Australian or European bottle, with very affordable prices written on the side.
