Head Chef Rhys Blackley upholds the level of sophistication that regulars at this popular Melbourne institution expect, while also delivering dishes with a distinctive clarity of flavour.
Being welcomed by impeccably attired waiters, in a particularly lush room that exudes character, sets the tone for an experience where serious attention to detail, with just the right amount of playfulness, hits the mark for a memorable occasion.
The menu leans towards Italian–Asian fusion, ranging from crumbed zucchini flowers to miso-baked Patagonian toothfish. Intensely aromatic spanner crab ravioli with chilli–crab sauce, garnished with a prawn cracker and spicy rouille, delivers great depth of flavour that skilfully crosses global culinary borders. More traditional, but equally enjoyable, is the pan-roasted Flinders Island lamb rump with exquisitely cooked glazed sweetbreads, potato mash, Tuscan kale and pine mushrooms ‘à la Grecque’. It’s hard to fault any of the dishes leaving the kitchen, or the well-curated wine list that caters for all tastes and price points.
PSST! Whether you want an express or lazy lunch, tasting menu or cocktail party, Matteo’s success is being all things to all people.
