The Reymond family’s L’Hôtel Gitan has been serving excellent French-inspired gastropub cuisine at this gorgeous iconic building on Prahran’s Commercial Road for several years.
Inside, there’s a fabulous bar for snacks or a few cheeky vinos before dinner, and at the rear is the elegant dining room that has a formal, yet relaxed ambience. It’s a great spot for a family dinner, catch-up with friends or a romantic evening.
The French menu begins with ‘petite’ options, such as a delicate blue-fin tuna tartare or a visually exciting chicken cigar. A special of kingfish ceviche presents super-fresh chunks of kingfish in a tomato gazpacho with a green granita. Medium-size dishes (moyen) include their seared marinated tiger prawns: beautiful crustaceans on a bed of creamy yoghurt, compressed cucumber and tiny hints of chilli with an orange tinge. From the main courses (plat principal), try the eye fillet – a premium steak served with French fries and house-made creamy bearnaise – or a glazed duck leg with caramelised onion crème, quinoa and orange sauce.
PSST! A set menu is offered on Sundays – four courses for just $50 or five courses for $60.
