Despite the financial woes and being a chain restaurant started by a celebrity chef who lives in the United Kingdom, Jamie’s Italian offers an excellent take on Italian cuisine. Now under the control of a local franchise, Jamie’s offers traditional, rustic-style Italian food with a similar standard menu in all venues.
The restaurant is on two levels, with timber floors, walls and tables. Hanging hams, sausages, chillies and other tasty antipasti surround the large, central marble salumi bar, while the walls are adorned with photographs of Jamie and shelves containing his cookbooks. Service is efficient and friendly.
The caprese salad, with heritage tomatoes, fresh bocconcini and basil, is vibrant and tasty. Fritto misto delivers cubes of crispy fried fish and calamari with a paprika aioli. Named after Jamie’s Italian mentor and partner, Gennaro’s tagliatelle bolognese is well cooked with a simple meat sauce, while the ‘nduja vongole presents fresh linguine tossed with freshly steamed pipis in a spicy, salty ‘nduja sauce. The pasta is all made in-house – the recipe is on the wall!
