Head Chef Douglas Keyte leads the kitchen team at Hellenika, a modern Greek taverna serving authentic Greek food. The venue is owned by Simon Gloftis, who is keen to see the Gold Coast grow in culinary stature to rival the major cities.
Recently renovated, the decor is minimalist, with timber tables and white rendered walls lit by black chandeliers. There’s a large bar down one side and an open kitchen at the back. The service reflects traditional Greek hospitality – friendly, efficient and accommodating.
Start with grilled kefalograviera cheese, lightly cooked and served with lemon and salt, or a plate of dips including freshly made taramasalata and fava – salty, flavoursome and served with lots of fresh bread. Plump veal dolmades deliver an earthy umami flavour, or perhaps try the firm and juicy flash-fried calamari. For mains, there are Greek classics such as traditional eggplant moussaka, a terrific spanakopita with a crisp filo pastry filled with creamy spinach and cheese, and a house special of freshly baked, melt-in-the-mouth Junee lamb with a strong lamb and rosemary flavour.
PSST! Head to the rooftop bar to enjoy cocktails and Greek snacks.
