George Calombaris must be Australia’s best-known Greek chef, bringing his take on Greek food to Australians through the television screen and his stable of restaurants, including Gazi and The Press Club. Hellenic Republic Kew is the sister to his Brunswick original.
The restaurant has an open, light and airy feel with plenty of room for big groups. Greek pop music adds to the upbeat vibe.
The menu presents Greek taverna-style offerings, featuring carefully selected classics, some with a modern twist. There are plenty of meze to share, such as grilled haloumi or taramasalata (made with white cod roe, arguably far superior to the more common pink roe version). The mains are a ‘celebration of the beast’, with choices certain to satisfy any carnivore. The arniaki, or slow-roasted shoulder of lamb, is deeply infused with flavour and deliciously tender. Salads and sides are bursting with fresh goodness: simple iceberg lettuce is taken to a new level with a lemony sunflower seed and yoghurt dressing.
PSST! Hellenic Republic Kew hosts regular vegan nights that truly celebrate the Mediterranean diet. Check their Facebook page for details.
