This Italian-inspired bar and café joined the South Yarra ranks in late 2016, and offers something for everyone with all-day dining.
Gilson is a refreshing eatery with lycra-wearing joggers popping in for a coffee and Danish pastry after a walk, as well as locals and the like in for a hearty lunch or gorgeous, seasonally driven dinner and a glass of wine. The wine list is concise, but has some local and international highlights, including a Tuscan chianti (also available by the glass) that goes sublimely with the Italian cuisine.
The menu is extensive. Start with a lovely harmonious vegetable dish of grilled broccolini teamed with honey, creamy ricotta and saltbush. Mains include a meltingly moist whole baby snapper with shaved tomato or try the half a roast chicken with crispy skin, served with sautéed greens and crunchy almonds in a decadent butter sauce. There’s a wood-fire oven for pizzas with delicious toppings, such as the potate with anchovies, potato and caramelised onion.
PSST! Every Thursday is spaghetti and wine night – $25 for your choice of pasta and a glass of wine.
