Co-owner Peter Lew is the nephew of Gilbert Lau, who founded the well-known Melbourne restaurant, Flower Drum, and apparently some of Gilbert’s recipes feature on the Fei Jai menu. Located on trendy Challis Avenue, the restaurant’s feel is appropriately contemporary with the use of dark, moody colours and partly exposed brick walls. The tables spill out onto the street, so diners can choose to dine inside or eat al fresco.
Fei Jai concentrates on Cantonese food using fresh produce prepared simply. The egg-white crab omelette is a surprisingly tasty dish with a very pleasant silky texture. The side dish of Chinese broccoli with ginger and oyster sauce is very lightly cooked, and its fresh flavour provides a great foil to some of the richer main courses. Crispy beef strips with sweet black vinegar and sesame delivers a well-balanced combination of sweet and sour flavours.
