A stunning cellar door and restaurant has opened in the historic town of Morpeth, showcasing the award-winning wines of a fresh new – but already highly regarded – brand on the Hunter winemaking scene
Quickly making waves in the industry for its quality small-batch wines, Boydell’s boutique winery has garnered attention by winning a plethora of awards at local and national wine shows where its vintages have received glowing accolades from the prestigious critic James Halliday.
Located in East Gresford in the Hunter Valley, Boydell’s is owned and operated by Daniel and Jane Maroulis. The picturesque vineyard on the Allyn River is named after Charles Boydell, who settled the property in 1826 and planted some of the first vines seen in the Hunter.
‘We took over the property in 2015, moving our family from western NSW to pursue our dream of small-scale wine production,’ Daniel says.
‘To do so we work with one of Australia’s best winemakers and keep a hands-on approach every step of the way to produce a consistently honest and good wine.’
The new cellar door and restaurant is the first in Morpeth, with the picturesque building reflecting the rich history of the vines and the link with Charles Boydell.
‘Charles wrote in his journals about catching a paddle steamer regularly from Paterson to Morpeth or travelling there by horse and cart,’ Daniel says. ‘This authenticity is important to us.’

Boydell’s cellar door is open Wednesday to Sunday and offers wine sales and tastings, which can be paired with local cheese platters.
The restaurant, led by Head Chef Sheldon Black, is open from lunch on Friday through to Sunday dinner, and offers a contemporary seasonal menu focusing on locally sourced produce.

‘We’ll change the menu regularly, keeping Boydell’s wines in mind to create a wonderfully harmonious experience,’ Sheldon says.
‘We are taking bookings for functions and groups as well as those who just wander up Green Street and discover us. The courtyard is the perfect spot for springtime dining and drinks and the large fireplace inside will make it nice and cosy over winter. We have had a lot of interest from people having pre-wedding dinners and post-wedding recoveries, which will be lots of fun.’
