Saturday, 22 February
Championing the culinary flavours of Latin America, Mamasita will celebrate its 10th birthday on Saturday, 22 February with a special chef collaboration dinner and a margarita masterclass earlier in the day.
Diners can celebrate the milestone with a delicious once-off degustation of ten dishes from past and present to commemorate the evolution of the famed eatery. To honour the beginnings of Mamasita, the kitchen will reunite with the very first head chef and original co-founder, Jason Jones, who will fly back to Melbourne from Singapore.
An exciting announcement that is closely timed with the celebration is that much-respected chef Chris Watson is set to permanently join the team as executive chef at Mamasita. His appointment will kick off at the collaboration event with Jason Jones for the 10th birthday dinner.
For the exciting celebratory dinner, guests can expect the likes of Oysters Aguachile – organic ‘Wapengo’ oyster, cucumber aguachile, apple vinegar sorbet, worm salt, tequila, as well as classic 2010 menu items Tostaditas de Cangrejo – crabmeat, avocado, cucumber, tamarind mayo and habanero, and Cordero con Adobo – roast lamb rump, ancho chilli adobo, cranberries, coriander, and many other delicious dishes. Diners can join the feast at either of two sittings – 5.30pm or 8.30pm. Tickets are priced at $110 per person and include a welcome cocktail.
Cocktail-lovers can also celebrate World Margarita Day by mastering the art of the perfect margarita with legendary mixologist Linus Schaxmann from Herradura Tequila along with Mamasita maestro Mezcalier Luis Herrera, who will be heading up a margarita masterclass earlier in the day from 1pm–3pm. Participants will be shaking and drinking four margaritas, walking away with new-found knowledge of agave spirits and a commemorative showbag containing some Herradura Tequila, agave nectar, a recipe book and a complete cocktail tool kit. Tickets are $75 or $95, which will include a taco flight.
Looking back to when it all started, co-owner Matt Lane found himself craving Mexican food in his home town of Melbourne ten years ago. A short consulting gig at a Collins Street bar quickly led to a business plan for a Mexican restaurant similar to the one he’d been running in NYC – La Esquina. With years of running La Esquina, followed by living in Oaxaca, Mexico, Matt was well versed on the intricacies of Mexican food and approached Jason Jones to head the kitchen. After recipe testing in Jason’s apartment, directly behind what is now Matt’s (and later co-owner, Nick Peters’) other Mexican restaurant, Hotel Jesus, months later Matt and Jason launched Mamasita. Since then, Jason has gone on to open Mexican restaurants in Singapore and Indonesia under The Loco Group, and Matt has since opened Hotel Jesus and today manages both restaurants.
Matt Lane said: “Whoever would have thought a quick trip home would turn into a ten-year adventure of serving Mexican food to Melburnians. I’m forever thankful for this wonderful city and its open-hearted people and very excited to be welcoming Chris Watson into our family. Chris and I have had a mutual respect for each other since our days working with Andrew McConnell and we both can’t wait for this next chapter.”
Chris Watson will bring his wealth of experience as former head chef at Supernormal Canteen, Cutler and Co, Marion, and co-owner of Luxembourg as well as a passion for Mexican cuisine, which he has explored at recent kitchen takeovers.
Over the past few years, Mamasita has led the way with bringing modern Latin American cuisine to Melbourne locals and visitors from afar, with head chef Martin Zozaya’s deep understanding of Central, South American and Spanish flavours, stemming from his Mexico upbringing and Argentinian heritage.
