It may be winter, but there are plenty of reasons to brave the cold, with a host of exciting events coming up throughout July in Melbourne … and beyond.


Tipico Pizza Masterclass

For one Saturday in July, Windsor's favourite Italian, Tipico, is celebrating Melbourne's favourite carb with a pizza rendition of its sell-out masterclass. Classes will be taught by Head Chef Daniele Colombo and hands will get messy as guests knead and roll their own dough. Once in the oven, participants can relax and enjoy a lunch of freshly baked pizza paired with a glass of wine, before taking home dough of their own making, ready to wow at the next Italian dinner party.

Good Morning Vietnam

Following the success of last year’s Good Morning Vietnam, Hanoi Hannah’s one-off brunch is back, this time partnering with hospitality social enterprise STREAT for feasting to feel good about. Commune Group – the team behind the Vietnamese favourite – will host the annual event on Sunday, 21 July at its flagship New Quarter site on Swan Street, Richmond, with proceeds of the ticket sales to be donated to STREAT to help disadvantaged youths. In a collaboration that sees two distinctly Melbourne hospitality brands join forces for a worthy cause, Executive Chef Anthony Choi is teaming up with STREAT’s Head Baker Didiet Radityawan to create a special Vietnamese-inspired pastry. Kick start the day with a freshly brewed Viet-style coffee designed by STREAT using its award-winning blends, before diving into decadent brunch bites including lobster and garlic butter banh mi and wild mushroom and truffle banh xeo – a crispy Vietnamese pancake. And guests can make it a boozy brekkie, with bloody Marys and punch bowls aplenty.

What Grows Together Goes Together

Following the success of last year’s What Grows Together Goes Together winter series at Stokehouse St Kilda, Head Chef Ollie Hansford and Van Haandel Group Sommelier Gavin Cremming will present a sequel to the special dinner events, this time championing a new selection of regions throughout Victoria. Hosted in the Palm Room – Stokehouse’s stunning private dining space – Ollie and Gavin will take guests on a culinary tour of Victoria whilst hearing from a selection of passionate local producers highlighted on the menu. Coming up this month will be the second event for the 2019 series, shining a spotlight on Victoria’s High Country on Thursday, 18 July. Epitomising Stokehouse’s commitment to sustainability and local, ethical sourcing, they will first hand forage and meet with local farmers, winemakers, fruit growers and producers to then showcase the region through food and wine pairings at the event.

Bottomless Pasta at Fatto

Unlimited pasta is back by popular demand. With Melbourne in the midst of winter, relaxed Italian eatery Fatto Bar and Cantina has extended its bottomless servings of pasta throughout July. Priced at just $30 per person, Head Chef James Kummrow will showcase his pasta artistry with endless bowls of his most popular dishes, ideal for feasting with friends.

Pasta dishes include:

Orecchiette, saffron cauliflower, golden raisins, white wine, parsley, parmesan

Puttanesca; bucatini, tomato, olives, capers, anchovy, chilli

Ishizuka Truffle Kaiseki Dinner

On Monday, 8 July, Ishizuka will present a special eight-course kaiseki dinner, celebrating the culinary world’s most revered ingredient. Using truffle in each dish, Head Chef Hitoshi Miyazawa’s menu will showcase premium Australian truffles at their best, perfectly tying in to kaiseki’s philosophy of honouring the finest produce.

Winter Cooking Classes at Terindah Estate

The interactive, rustic and relaxed culinary sessions will span across six Friday evenings throughout winter. Each class will finish with guests enjoying their completed dishes, paired with matched Terindah Estate wines. Trentino Alto Adige Lunch at Tipico

Continuing its first birthday celebrations, Windsor restaurant Tipico has revealed the second menu of its regional Italian lunch series. July sees the venue launch a menu dedicated to the northern Italian region of Trentino Alto Adige. The special menu will feature crunchy polenta with wild mushrooms and brie, spätzli verdi with spring onion and speck, and venison spezzatino with mashed potato.

On Sunday, 14 July, French gastropub L’Hôtel Gitan and contemporary French establishment Bistro Gitan will be offering special set menus in celebration of Bastille Day. Each venue will serve a four-course lunch of classical French dishes, with guests to tailor the menu to their tastes. L’Hôtel Gitan is open for both lunch and dinner with a four-course set menu lunch offering for $60 per person; dinner is available à la carte. Bistro Gitan is open for lunch only with a four-course set menu offering for $65 per person.

Running of the Bulls at Pontoon

For those not planning a warm European escape from the icy clutches of Melbourne winter, Pontoon is bringing the Spanish streets of Pamplona to the shores of St Kilda. To celebrate the yearly chaos that is the Running of the Bulls, the seaside venue will host a three-day-long Paella Party. For $25, each guest can feast on three different types of bottomless Basque-inspired paella all day long, feeling the Euro-summer warmth from the inside-out. 

Paella dishes include:

Arroz negro: squid ink black rice, Chorizo, squid, aioli
Paella Pollo y Alubias: saffron rice, chicken, green beans, smoked paprika 

Paella de Marisco: saffron rice, mussels, squid
